How to Tune a Bass Guitar

Tuning your bass guitar is essential for sounding good, whether you're playing alone or with a band. The standard 4-string bass tuning is E-A-D-G, from the thickest string to the thinnest — the same notes as the four lowest guitar strings, but one octave lower.

Bass strings are much thicker than guitar strings and produce lower frequencies, so it's important to use a tuner designed to detect these low pitches accurately. Our bass tuner is optimized for the full range of bass guitar frequencies, from the low B0 on a 5-string bass all the way up to C3 on a 6-string.

How to Use This Bass Tuner

  1. Select your bass type (4-string, 5-string, or 6-string) using the buttons at the top.
  2. Choose your tuning from the dropdown menu (Standard is selected by default).
  3. Click the microphone button and allow microphone access when prompted.
  4. Pluck a single string on your bass. The tuner will automatically detect which string you're playing.
  5. You can also tap a specific string button to tune that string individually.
  6. Turn the tuning peg until the indicator is centered and the status shows "In Tune."

Common Bass Tunings

Standard (EADG) — The default tuning for 4-string bass. Strings are tuned in perfect fourths, making scale patterns consistent across the fretboard. Used in virtually every genre.

Drop D — The low E string is dropped to D, making it easy to play power chords and low D riffs. Essential for rock, metal, and punk bass lines.

5-String Standard (BEADG) — Adds a low B string below standard tuning. Gives you five extra low notes without changing your fingering patterns. The go-to choice for modern bass players who need extended range.
