How to Tune a Bass Guitar

A clear E1–A1–D2–G2 workflow for stable low-frequency readings, correct octaves, alternate tunings, and strings that stay in tune.

Check the octave before adding tension

A bass target is much lower than the same note name on a guitar. Standard bass E is E1, not E2; standard 5-string low B is B0. Stop if a string feels unusually tight, the post winding looks unsafe, or the displayed octave is not the one you intended.

Tune EADG step by step

    Confirm the string count, tuning, and octave

    Standard 4-string bass is E1–A1–D2–G2 from the thickest string to the thinnest. Standard 5-string adds B0 below E1, and standard 6-string normally adds B0 below plus C3 above. Match both the note letter and octave before tightening.

    Choose a quiet signal path

    For microphone tuning, mute nearby speakers and move away from fans or conversation. Pluck one open string with a normal attack. If the room or device struggles with low bass, an instrument cable into an interface or a clip-on tuner can provide a cleaner signal.

    Start with the lowest string

    Pluck the open E1 on a 4-string or B0 on a standard 5- or 6-string. Let the noisy attack pass, then read the sustained part of the note. Select the intended string manually if auto-detection follows an upper harmonic.

    Approach the target from below

    If the string is sharp, loosen it slightly below target first. Then raise pitch slowly to the target. Approaching from below helps the string settle against the nut and tuning post without leaving hidden slack.

    Tune the remaining strings low to high

    Continue one open string at a time toward the thinnest string. Mute every string you are not measuring so sympathetic vibration does not pull the detector toward another target.

    Stretch, settle, and recheck

    After all strings are close, play for a minute and recheck them. New strings and large changes in tuning need several gentle passes. Finish by checking notes against the band, keyboard, or recording reference you actually plan to use.

Drop D without losing the octave

In Drop D, only the thickest string changes: E1 falls a whole step to D1 at 36.71 Hz. A1, D2, and G2 stay where they were. Tune down past D1 and approach it from below, then recheck all four strings. Do not mistake the unchanged open D2 string for the new D1 target one octave below.

Very low tunings need more than a meter

A tuning can be numerically correct yet feel loose, buzz, or play sharp up the neck. Large pitch changes may require a suitable string gauge plus adjustments to relief, action, and intonation. A tuner measures pitch; it cannot decide whether a string set or setup is mechanically appropriate for the instrument.

Get a steadier low-frequency reading

  • Mute the other strings with both hands so only one open string sustains.
  • Read after the initial click and pitch bend of the pluck, not at the instant of attack.
  • Pluck with normal force; a very hard attack often begins sharp before settling.
  • Use the neck pickup or reduce treble when an amplified signal overemphasizes harmonics.
  • Select the target string manually when the detector jumps to the octave above.
  • Use a cable or clip-on tuner when the device microphone cannot capture B0 or E1 reliably.
